Rose Lehrman In most films that involve hypnosis, the trigger is the timeless trope of a swinging watch or other objects, a visual cue. This is not the case in Get Out, Jordan Peele’s directorial debut. Get Out is the story of a young, black photographer, Chris, going to visit Rose, his white girlfriend’s family for the first time. It explores race and its implications throughout time. The sound design in this film is very interesting and complex, as it relies on auditory cues, such as a spoon stirring a teacup, to alert the viewer of what is about to happen. One of the most important scenes, sound-wise, sets up important sounds that will become motifs throughout the film and helps create an atmosphere that continues through the whole film. The Colors of Coraline

Link to Video Essay Did you have an irrational fear of having buttons sewn into your eyes growing up? Neither did I, until I saw the movie Coraline. Henry Selick, director of Nightmare Before Christmas, once again enchants us with beautiful visuals, as we enter the world of Coraline Jones, a spunky eleven year old who is seriously lacking in the love department. Today, we will be making connections between the colors throughout the stop-motion masterpiece, how the cool and warm colors contrast, and also how color is utilized to make connections throughout the film. When Coraline’s family moves from Michigan to the dreary gray “Pink Palace Apartments” in Ashland Oregon, we are greeted by a somber scene, displaying the shoddy apartments, a foggy sky, and a thick outstretch of woods. Jurassic Park: Sound Design and Thematic Pacing

Mcguire Butz The calm before the storm. Twenty seconds into Jurassic Park, you are immediately at unease. After the drums in the title sequences, there is a surprisingly calm opening, with the workers working on the dinosaurs like nothing is wrong. But the audience knows right away, it won’t stay that way for long. Something about the sound gave us that thought. The sound choice in Jurassic Park helps to establish the tone and pacing of every scene. To start, the kitchen scene. Up until this point, the story (for our main characters at least) haven’t experienced the horror the island has in store for them. However, the non-diegetic sound gave this scene an outright eery tone. You know something is about to happen, you just don’t know when it’s going to happen. The raptors aren’t the only thing giving the audience a fear in this scene. Thanks to the eerie sound, and the accompanying raptors, this scene firmly sets a tone for not just this scene but perhaps the whole movie....
